Oxygen

Oxygen is something we can’t see, taste or touch, but it’s all around us in the air. It’s a gas that’s essential for nearly all living things, including humans, animals and plants.

It is a type of gas that makes up about 21% of the air we breathe. It’s one of the basic elements, meaning it’s a building block of matter, like hydrogen and carbon. Without oxygen, life on Earth wouldn’t exist as we know it. Our bodies rely on oxygen to survive.

Every cell in your body needs oxygen to create energy. Inside each cell, there are tiny parts called mitochondria that act like power plants. They use oxygen to turn nutrients from food into energy, which powers everything you do—from running and thinking to breathing and even sleeping. Oxygen helps cells grow and repair themselves. When you get a cut or bruise, your body needs oxygen to help new cells grow and fix the damaged area.

After your cells use oxygen to make energy, they produce a waste product called carbon dioxide. Oxygen helps the body get rid of this waste, which you then exhale each time you breathe out.

The main way we get oxygen is by breathing. When you breathe in, air goes into your lungs. Inside your lungs are tiny air sacs called alveoli, where oxygen from the air enters your blood. Then it travels all around your body, reaching every cell and tissue that needs it. It’s amazing to think that every single breath you take helps fuel your body!

Physical activities like running, walking or playing sports, make you breathe harder and bring more oxygen into your body. This can improve your lung capacity and help your heart and muscles get stronger. Spending time outdoors where there’s more fresh air can help you get more oxygen than being indoors all the time. Trees and plants produce oxygen, so being in nature is extra beneficial! Taking slow, deep breaths can help you get more oxygen than taking short, shallow breaths. Deep breathing can also help reduce stress

If your body doesn’t get enough oxygen, it can start to feel weak or tired. In more serious cases, a lack of oxygen can lead to confusion, dizziness and difficulty breathing. That’s why it’s so important to breathe properly and get plenty of fresh air. People who have trouble getting enough oxygen might use special devices, like oxygen tanks, to help them breathe easier.

Water is made up of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom (H₂O). This means that when you drink water, you’re actually consuming oxygen, too!

Oxygen is a vital gas that keeps us and most other living things alive. We need it to produce energy, grow and keep our bodies functioning. So focus on increasing your oxygen intake to improve your life and grow younger too.
