Amyloid Beta
Amyloid beta (Aβ) is a tiny piece of protein made in the brain. Normally, the brain gets rid of it, but sometimes it builds up, especially in people with Alzheimer’s disease. When too much amyloid beta collects, it can form clumps that hurt the brain, making it hard for brain cells to communicate. Over time, this can lead to memory problems and other difficulties.
During deep sleep, the brain gets rid of waste, including amyloid beta. This happens through a system called the glymphatic system, which works like a cleaning system for the brain. If you don’t get enough sleep or your sleep is poor, your brain can’t clean itself well, and amyloid beta can build up, making things worse over time.
High levels of amyloid beta in the brain can also mess up your sleep. People with too much amyloid beta often find it harder to sleep through the night. It’s like a bad cycle—poor sleep leads to more amyloid beta and more amyloid beta makes sleep worse.
Your body has an internal clock called the circadian rhythm, that helps you know when to sleep and when to wake up. Amyloid beta levels rise when this clock gets messed up, like if you stay up too late or have irregular sleep schedules.
Normally, amyloid beta levels go up and down during the day, but when your sleep schedule is off, your brain might not get rid of amyloid beta properly.
Deep sleep is super important for clearing out amyloid beta. If something like sleep apnea (a condition where you stop breathing briefly during sleep) or insomnia, interrupts deep sleep, amyloid beta can build up more.
When amyloid beta builds up and sleep is bad, it can affect how well your brain works, especially memory and thinking. This is why getting good sleep is so important for keeping your brain healthy.
